Brief History

The Order of Carmelites has a unique origin that dates back almost 800 years ago. The Order started out as hermits in the mountains of Carmel in Palestine at the prompting of no one but the providential hands of God. Through the centuries, the community has continually looked up to Elijah, the prophet and Mary, the Mother of Christ for inspiration, guidance and identity. No wonder to this day, the Carmelites are known for zealously integrating two streams of spirits: contemplative yet active, prayerful and prophetic, reflective while apostolic.

The Charism of O.Carm

The main elements of the Carmelites Charism are: Prayer, Brotherhood and Service. The Dynamic Element that unites us all is CONTEMPLATION. Above all, we are called to follow Jesus Christ and live the Gospel in daily life. In following Christ, we are inspired by two Biblical figures: Mary, our Lady of Mount Carmel and the Prophet Elijah, Every Carmelite is called to live this charism.
